123 DVD Clone is a simple but effective DVD copying tool. It doesn't do much else except make straight disc to disc copies, but the backups it produces are good quality and region free. The price is perhaps slightly high for the quality of the software, but it isn't too extortionate and the application should handle whatever you can throw at it.
123 DVD Clone does most of the basics required to make decent quality copies of your DVD movie collection. There are essentially three different modes to choose from when you start the application: disc to disc copy, disc to hard drive copy or hard drive to disc copy. When you copy to a disc you can easily choose to target either a dual layer or single layer DVDR and the software will automatically adjust its compressions settings so that you can fit a whole dual layer movie onto a single layer backup disc. This is essential as most movies now come on dual layer DVDs.
The backups you make with 123 DVD Clone will be region free and can play on any standard DVD player. 123 DVD Clone can handle most types of DVD copy protection at the moment, but there is no mention of how often the software is updated to keep up with the latest methods being introduced. In fact the support section of the web site is not great at all, but they do claim to provide answers to email queries within 48 hours.
The user interface 123 DVD Clone provides is simple, but effective. There aren't any complex settings to mess with, which novices will appreciate, but at the same time you don't get much control over what goes onto your backup DVD apart from choosing whether to copy the whole lot or just the main feature. The simplicity will be ideal for some people, but it might have been useful to include a few more features hidden away somewhere for those people who know what they are doing.
In all 123 DVD Clone is a slightly above average DVD copying tool. We reckon you can probably do better for the same price, but wouldn't say you have to. If you just want to make some basic DVD copies then check out 123 DVD Clone, but if you want some extra features for your money take a look at some of the products in our top ten list.
