Acala DVD Copy is a simple but useful DVD copying tool which is part of a larger suite of tools that cater for all your ripping and copying needs. The copies it produced were good quality and the application was very easy to use. This software is worth a look if you plan on backing up your DVD movie collection.
Acala DVD Copy handles most of the basic tasks you would expect from a DVD copying tool. You can make straight disc to disc copies or backup a whole movie to your hard drive. When copying a dual layer DVD you have the option to compress it to fit on a single layer DVDR and the resulting backup does not lose much in the way of quality. If you don't need the whole disc copied it is possible to select which parts to keep, such as specific audio tracks or extra features. The copies we made worked well in a standard DVD player and looked fine on a standard TV.
The backups you make with Acala DVD Copy are region free and so will play in most standalone DVD players. The software can also remove most types of copy protection with its integrated decrypter which means you will be able to copy most modern DVD movie releases. If you want to do anything else with your movies Acala DVD Copy is part of a suite of programs which integrate together and provide you with facilities for converting DVD movies to a variety of other file types. Probably the most useful is the tool which can rip a DVD movie to iPod format so that you can watch it on the go. These tools cost extra, but you can get a discount if you buy them with the main copying tool.
The user interface for Acala DVD copy is well designed and looks good. The screen is uncluttered and it's easy to find the right settings to do what you want to do. Our only gripe is that the English isn't too great in some parts and is even worse on the Acala web site. It's easy enough to understand what the text is telling you, but it is littered with spelling mistakes and some strange grammatical errors which make it seem slightly unprofessional.
English mistakes aside, Acala DVD Copy is a decent DVD copying tool and should do everything you want in order to backup your DVD collection. You'll get the best value if you go for some of the other tools too, otherwise the price tag may seem a bit high. It's worth checking out a few products in our top ten first, but otherwise Acala DVD copy should be everything you need.
