Convert X to DVD is a fully featured video conversion and burning application. It doesn't copy discs like most of the products in this category, but rather allows you to create DVDs from video files you have on your computer. It provides a large variety of different input and output options so that you can convert most common file types and choose your desired type of video output.
If you want to backup DVD movies from your collection then this is not the product for you. This software does not do the ripping part of the process necessary to get the movie off the original disc, but instead allows you to create professional looking DVDs with any video files that you have on your computer. It is however possible to find tools on the internet which will rip a movie from a DVD and you can then use this application to burn the movie to a blank DVD.
The software recognizes most types of video file that you can think of and converts them so that they can be burned to a DVD and played in a standalone DVD player. You can even create your own DVD menus to access different video files on the disc, either from scratch or from one of the predefined templates. There is also support for external subtitle files so that you can create your own subtitle tracks to go along with the videos you burn.
The DVDs we created worked well in a standalone DVD player with only a few small glitches in the picture from time to time, but nothing very noticeable. If you know what you are doing there are a lot of settings that you can tweak to get the best possible output from your conversion - for example video post processing settings like cropping and de-interlacing options. However, you don't have to bother with these if you don't want to and you will still end up with a decent quality DVD.
Although Convert X to DVD is a good quality application and works quite well, we think the price is quite high. Discounts are possible if you buy other products from VSO at the same time however. If you have lots of movies on your hard drive or regularly download video from the internet that you want to burn to DVD, then this software will work well for you, but if you want to copy discs from your DVD movie collection then take a look at some of the products in our top ten list.
