Editor's Verdict:

Corel DVD Copy is a DVD copying and authoring application by the makers of the popular graphics software. While Corel may be experts in the graphics world there are a couple of small niggles that means their DVD copy offering comes in at the lower end of our top ten list. However, it has still beaten many others to feature in the top ten at all so it is by no means a bad product!

The first thing we should point out, and the thing that will put many people off, is that you can't copy protected DVD movies with Corel DVD Copy. That means it's not really any use for backing up your DVD collection at home. It is possible to download third party decrypters that should allow it to copy protected movies, but these won't be supported by Corel so don't expect brilliant results. However, if you want an easy and fun to use application to copy unprotected DVDs or author new ones from videos you have on your computer, Corel DVD Copy fits the bill.

Feature-wise Corel DVD Copy blows away a lot of its competition that allows copying protected movies. It works with the latest formats like DivX HD, allows you to choose which chapters or titles to include in your copied DVD, converts movies to portable device compatible formats and can even act as a virtual CD or DVD drive using a disc image on your hard drive. There is also an 'Intelligent folder monitoring' feature which monitors a specified folder and automatically converts and/or burns any video files you drop into it. You even get a label editor which lets you design the outer case label as well as the image for the disc itself - if you have a burner which supports LightScribe™ technology. There are lots of other features we don't even have space to mention, which make it a really useful application for all your DVD authoring needs.

Corel DVD Copy's user interface is one of the glossiest and highly polished we have seen. You get a neat little animated selector wheel which lets you choose the type of project you want to work on and the rest of the interface is equally well designed and far removed from the boring standard Windows style. The cost of all this gloss though is that it does seem to slow the computer down at times - especially if you have other applications open at the same time. There are also a couple of parts which aren't explained very well and might confuse novice users, but for the most part it is great to use.

We think Corel DVD Copy is a well designed, fully featured and useful product, if (and it's a big if) you don't want to backup protected movies. It's great for creating DVDs of your home movies or compilations of copyright free clips, but simply no use at all if you are looking for an application that will backup your DVD movie collection. We suggest weighing up what you really need the application to do and, if you don't want to copy protected movies, Corel DVD Copy should be a major consideration.
