Dup-DVD is a simple, but effective, tool for backing up DVD movies to CD. The software will rip the movie and compress it into a format ready to be burned to a CD. A few different ripping options are provided but for the most part it is a one click process that even computer novices should manage.
Dup-DVD is a very basic tool that allows you to rip a movie from a DVD disc to store on your hard drive or burn straight to a CD. The movie it rips will be a lower quality than the original DVD quality movie because it has to be compressed to a size that will fit on a CDR. Most common formats are provided as ripping options, such as VCD, MPEG and AVI, which all provide similar levels of movie quality.
Dup-DVD does not make perfect copies of your DVD discs, but rather provides you with an option to store more movies on one DVD or CD. It is produced by the same company which produces our number one DVD copying application and that's where you should look if you want to be able to make perfect 1:1 copies. The files Dup-DVD creates are free of copy protection or region coding because they are not DVD format files. This means that they will play on computers which have the correct coder installed, but might not play on all standalone DVD players.
The interface DVD-Dup provides couldn't be much simpler. You select a source and a target drive, click copy and the software handles the rest. There are some extra settings hidden in an options window, but for the most part you want need to bother with them and they just control the output file type and aspect ratio.
Dup-DVD is useful if you want to make compressed backups of your DVD movie collection. If you were to store the output files on a DVD you could fit up to about 5 movies on the one disc, albeit at a lower quality than a straight copy. This application also comes in cheaper than its big brother which makes 1:1 copies, but is a much simpler application. The backups we made were all decent quality and we would recommend this if you want to make compressed backups of your DVD movies.
