DVDFab is an all in one, easy to use solution for copying and converting DVDs. It has a variety of different copying modes which let you backup your DVDs the way you want to and an easy to use interface to access them all. Although it narrowly missed out being higher up the rankings, DVDFab has done extremely well to be in the number three position of our top ten DVD copying applications.
DVDFab is ideal if you want to customize your DVDs as you back them up. The 8 different copying modes it offers allow you to, for example, split a dual layer DVD onto two standard DVDs or combine two DVDs onto one disc. You can also select exactly what you want to go on your backup DVD in terms of the menus, extra features and titles. This is really handy for copying episodic DVDs, such as TV seasons, as you can condense the original copy down and store it on less DVDs. If all this sounds a bit complicated then don't worry, the software still provides you with a one click method to make a full disc 1 to 1 copy.
One feature that DVDFab has which makes it stand out from the competition is that it can perform bit for bit copies of any DVD. This means you can make exact copies of data discs or dual layer discs which allows you to copy games, like PS2 DVDs. In our experience this doesn't always work absolutely perfectly and can depend on the disc, but for the most part it seemed to do the job.
DVDFab also allows you to remove the encryption and region codes from the backup DVDs you make - even without downloading any extras as some applications require. However, if you want to be able to copy HD movies you do need to download the extra HD decrypter, but it is provided for free. There are also slight differences in the functionality of the platinum and gold versions so make sure to use the handy feature comparison page to check which you think you will need.
As an extra add on to DVDFab you can also download a mobile video convertor. This costs an extra $19.99 and works in conjunction with the basic DVDFab software. It allows you to easily convert DVDs into formats that are compatible with popular portable devices like the iPod, Zune and PSP. Conversion is very simple and the interface simply gives you a button to select which device you want to use, a few extra options and then you are ready to go. Although it's an extra cost we highly recommend getting this add on if you plan on watching your DVD collection on a portable device.
The user interface DVDFab provides is excellent and very easy to use. It is designed more like a standard Windows application than the other applications in our top spots and we think this is beneficial because it makes it seem much more familiar. The fancy, heavy on graphics, interfaces some other applications provide can look nice, but can sometimes feel a bit clunky to use. DVDFab uses standard Windows controls that have been enhanced to look slightly better and it works well when you are trying to put together a custom DVD.
DVDFab is a very useful and well put together application. It does everything you will need for backing up your DVD movie collection as well as your game collection. The interface is intuitive and shouldn't cause a problem for most users - although very novice users might prefer something slightly simpler. However, don't take our word for it, DVDFab offers a 30 day free trial so try it out for yourself and see!
