Editor's Verdict:

DVD neXt Copy is an excellent DVD copying application with many different incarnations which each add different features to the software. No matter which version you eventually go for you will find the application easy to use and ready to do everything necessary to back up your DVD movie collection. Try to keep up as we explain the differences between them!

Quite why the developers of DVD neXt Copy think it is important to release four different versions of what is almost exactly the same product we aren't sure, but the application comes in Xpress, Standard, Pro and Ultimate flavours. The main differences are as follows. The Xpress version only does straight forward copying -you can choose whether or not to include the menus and extras, but that's about it. One step up to the standard version and you are given the ability to pick and choose which tracks from the source DVD you want copied onto your backup. Another step up to the Pro version and you get all the previous features plus a facility for converting DVDs straight to a format compatible with portable devices like iPods. Right at the top is the Ultimate version which adds a feature to copy up to ten standard DVDs onto one BluRay disc and some other small technical improvements.

If you are still slightly confused as to which version will suit your needs there is a handy feature comparison chart on the DVD neXt Copy website. The main idea though, is that even the most basic Xpress version provides everything you need to backup a standard DVD. As most DVDs these days come on dual layer discs it is handy that the software provides a feature which will condense a dual layer disc down to fit on a standard DVDR without sacrificing much quality. Your backups will also be copy protection and region coding free thanks to the innovative neXt Tech ™ technology which keeps your software up to date with the latest techniques for removing copy protection. All of this can be achieved very easily in just a few clicks; even with the more advanced versions it isn't always necessary to mess with all of the settings available as most will be set to the optimum values.

The user interface on each of the version of DVD neXt Copy is fairly uniform. The Xpress edition has the most simple interface and allows you to quickly copy straight from disc to disc without bothering about too much else. From the Standard edition and up, the user interface is 'skinnable' which means you can choose from a variety of different looks. Some might just change the colours of the interface, while others make more drastic changes and move buttons and windows around. This is a nice addition to include, but one most people probably won't really bother with due to the fact that the default skin is perfectly useable so there is no need to change it.

DVD neXt Copy is a well designed and reasonably priced application - the Xpress edition is one of the cheapest products in our top ten - as long as you go for the download option rather than the mail order option. We would also recommend that most people probably won't want to go any higher than the Pro version unless they have a Blu Ray burner sitting around at home! Make sure you know what you want to do with the software before you buy, but if you get it wrong there is always a 30 day money back guarantee!
