DVD Wizard Pro is a straightforward, basic DVD copying tool which also allows you to copy games and convert VHS video to DVD format. Although the DVD copying functionality is fairly basic, DVD Wizard Pro makes it into our top ten because it also provides these two other functions. Read on to find out if this is the right application for your needs.
We would like to see more information provided on the DVD Wizard Pro web site and perhaps some screenshots of the application itself as this product could quite easily be confused with a previous DVD Wizard Pro which was just a collection of e-books. We are happy to report that this is actually a software tool which allows you to copy DVDs, games and backup your old VHS cassettes onto DVD.
The actual DVD copying functionality of DVD Wizard Pro is not the best we have seen. The software can remove copy protection - but only if it is of the CSS variety. Although some DVDs still use this, many others use different types of copy protection that DVD Wizard Pro cannot handle. Furthermore it does not provide an option to condense a dual layer DVD down to a single DVDR or provide support for episodic DVDs - like a season of 24. Despite this, the copies that DVD Wizard Pro does make are good quality and worked in our test DVD player. You can also backup a DVD movie onto multiple CDROMs in VCD format, which is something many other applications neglect to offer.
Where DVD Wizard Pro does exceed the competition is in its ability to copy game DVDs - for PC, PS2 and XBOX, but not latest generation consoles - and also backup old VHS videos to DVD. The application can remove the copy protection from your games and burn them to DVDR to be played either on a PC or a console with a mod chip. This won't work for every game, and most likely not the most up to date ones, but does the job for slightly older titles. Backing up VHS cassettes to DVD is a very simple process using the application once you have connected your VHS player to your PC. You will need to have an appropriate video card in your computer and the appropriate cable to connect to it though.
The interface DVD Wizard Pro provides is fairly basic but works effectively. You select where your source disc is, where your destination disc is and the software pretty much does the rest. There are a few other options to play with such as the ability to rip a movie to compressed DivX format on your hard drive. The whole thing is nothing special to look at, but that isn't too important if it does the job properly.
In all DVD Wizard Pro is a useful application if you plan on copying more than just movie DVDs. If you also want to copy games and backup old VHS cassettes then you should check it out. However, if you want to be able to copy the latest DVD movies and re-author them slightly then it's worth looking at some of the other products in our top ten.
