ImToo DVD Express is a fast and easy to use piece of DVD copying software. It doesn't support all the features some of its competitors provide, but is still a useful tool and produces decent quality copies. It is part of a large suite of DVD copying tools which may also be useful if you are thinking of buying this one and some good discounts are available if you are buying more than one application.
ImToo DVD Express provides you with a quick and easy way to make 1 to 1 copies of all of your DVD movies. If this is all you want to do then it's great, but some other applications offer more in depth settings and features like episodic copying. This is a noticeable feature that is missing from the application and means that you can't choose which episodes to include when you are copying, for example, a season of Heroes. However, you do get to choose which subtitle and language tracks to include and whether to copy the whole disc or just the movie without menus and extras. There is also the option to compress a dual layer DVD-9 DVD down so that it fits onto a standard DVD-5 disc. This is an essential feature if you plan on backing up recent movies as they almost invariably come on a dual layer disc.
ImToo DVD Express will remove the region coding from your backups and can remove most types of copy protection. It stumbled with a couple of the more recent movies we tried, but the software is constantly updated to keep up with new copy protection techniques. If you know what you are doing it should also be possible to use it with a third party decrypter - although that isn't essential.
The area ImToo DVD Express seems to excel in is the speed of its copying process. Our test copies seemed to go a good bit faster than some of the other products we have reviewed, which is great if you have a lot of DVDs you want to back up. Unfortunately the quality of the copies didn't seem to be quite as good as some other products. They were certainly watchable, but if you looked closely there were a few jittery or strangely coloured pixels which may annoy some people. Of course this could have been down to scratches or dust on the master copy of the disc.
The user interface Imtoo DVD Express provides is simple and easy on the eye. The main window gives you information about the disc you are copying and there are drop down boxes at the sides to let you select the audio and subtitle tracks you want to include. That's pretty much all you will usually need but there are some more complex settings hidden away in other menus.
We think ImToo DVD Express is a useful DVD copying tool. It doesn't have all the features some other applications have, but comes with a reasonable price tag. It is also one of the only products in our top ten to provide a Mac version - although for some reason that's a bit more expensive. If you want a simple way of making backup DVDs you can't go too far wrong with Imtoo DVD Express.
